Lunch Notes
Hello Everyone and welcome back to another Copic Oz tutorial! If you've been browsing around Pinterest, you may have come across handmade Lunch Notes - little messages for your kids when they open their lunch boxes (or perhaps your hubby??). Since I have 3 kids of my own and two still in Primary School (I've been told by the High Schooler, under NO circumstances am I to slip one of these in his lunch box) that I would have a go making these myself!
I've grabbed the Sassy Succulents stamp set by Power Poppy, a Memento Ink Pad, X-press It Mask It and X-press It Blending Card.
I wanted to overlay the images and Mask It is perfect for the task! A great way to create a mask that you can use over and over is to stamp the image you want to mask onto X-press It Blending Card, then remove the backing sheet and place the Mask It over the top.
While the Mask It is over the top, use a pair of sharp scissors to fussy cut very close to the edges.
Next stamp the same image onto another piece of Blending Card and then peel off the Mask It shape and place it over the top.
Ink up the other stamp you want to use and stamp it over the top of the Mask It covered image.
Peel off the Mask It to reveal the images.
Colour your image! I've used a variety of colours......
Large Cactus - G12, G24, G28
Large Pot - E93, E95, E97, E99
Small Cactus - YG21, YG93, YG97
Small Pot - B00, B12, E93
Pebbles - C1, C3, YG93, E93, 0
Why not use the tips in last month's tutorial about shadows and note how the pot in front has left a cast shadow on the one behind!
Cut the card to size and either write a message to your sweetie or use a suitable sentiment stamp. I really like this sentiment in the Sassy Succulents set and thought it would be perfect to remind a child that they are perfect the way they are! You could simply mat this with a piece of coloured cardstock, but if you can frame it with a pretty diecut.....why not use it!
I hope you've enjoyed today's tutorial and why not surprise those you love and leave them a little message in their lunches - I bet you'll make their day!

Stormy Summer Skies
Hello Everyone!! Today's tutorial is meant to be Summer themed and yes, usually people reach for things related to the beach, pool, drinks or BBQ type things.......after the last few weeks, the most appropriate thing here in 'sunny' Queensland is Stormy Skies!! We've had a shocker of a start to Summer, storm after storm not to mention the massive storm that had hail the size of cricket balls pelt the city and caused over $800 million worth of damage. So on that note, let's go play at creating some stormy skies......
I've used this cute image by Unity from their Hodgepodge of Happiness stamp set, stamped it in Memento Tuxedo Black onto X-press It Blending Card and coloured with Copics.
Umbrella/Boots - Y11, Y15, Y17
Bench - E81, E84, E87
Dress - B00, B12, B14, RV11, RV13
Grass - YG11, YG13, YG17, E81, BG93
So far our sky is just white card and that doesn't look very stormy at all! To create some clouds I've used some X-press It Mask It and Spellbinders Labels 6 Die. (You could cut your own custom shape if you don't have a cloud shaped die!)
While I have the Mask It out, I've stamped another image (also onto Blending Card because it's nice and smooth and you can reuse the mask), put a piece of Mask It over the top so it's stuck to the white card and then cut the image with a pair of scissors. You want to cut it nice and tight otherwise you'll have a white line around your image.
Peel off the Mask It and place it over your coloured image.
Because the sky goes a weird green colour when there is hail in a storm, I'm lightly airbrushing the sky with BG93 first.
Then peel off your cloud shape and place it in the sky of your image. I've used C3 to make my storm clouds.
Once you've lightly airbrushed around the edge, move it around and repeat. This will give the effect of clouds in the sky. I've gone a step further and added some C5 to really deepen those clouds. (Not totally replicating the recent hail storm - they were more like C9!)
I've also gone back and added a little more BG93 as well as an all over C1 to dull the clouds a bit. I've also taken the BG93 and airbrushed down the the ground - it won't effect the coloured image since she is protected by the Mask It! Once you are happy with the way your sky looks, peel off your mask and put it back on your original stamped piece and save it for the next time you need it!
Make your card!
Just to note - I would never recommend sitting on a bench under an umbrella in a hail or electrical storm.....in fact I'd be running for cover and unplugging all the electricals in the house! However, she makes a cute card don't you think?!
I hope you've enjoyed today's tutorial and everyone here at Copic Oz would like to wish all our readers a very Merry Christmas and a safe and Happy New Year! See you in 2015!
Happy Colouring

A Very Copic Christmas
Hi Kate here and this month I'll be showing you two very quick and simple Christmas projects that you can complete in under 30 minutes - yes that's both in under 30 mins with the help of a Copic ABS (Air Brush System).
The first project is some Copic decorated wrapping paper, this is a wonderful way to re-use the brown or plain paper that you receive during the year, wrapped around other items. The same technique will work on paper, tissue and even cellophane - so save all that wrapping and create your own Copic coloured decorator papers.
For this project you will need:
- Copic Sketch Markers in coordinating colours (I used: B79, RV66 & BG57)
- Copic Air Brush System
- Stencil or template (I used a punched snowflake)
- Recycled paper, tissue or cellophane
- Length of white ribbon
Begin by laying the stencil flat onto your paper and lightly spraying on the first colour (RV66) with the airbrush. Move the stencil around, creating as many little Raspberry snowflakes as you like.
At this point you can continue to use the snowflake with the next colour (BG57) or you can use a different shape stencil for some variation. Add as many Jasper (Blue Green) snowflakes as you like - just remember to leave some room for the 3rd colour.
Time to add the final colour, now B79 'Iris' is one of the stronger Copic colours, so spray this lightly and I didn't add as many snowflakes of this colour to my project, so as not to overwhelm the other colours. Once finished adding snowflakes, put your paper aside to dry - this won't take long!
Now you don't HAVE to colour the ribbon to match - I just thought it was a cute accent. For those of you who have coloured ribbon with your Copic Markers before you will know how long this can take and how much ink is used. Well I'm happy to report that not only does colouring ribbon with the Copic ABS use much less ink, it's also loads faster and the results are beautiful! All I've done here is airbrush the B79 onto the ribbon, I've added more ink to one side than the other so I will get a two-toned effect to the ribbon when I tie it.
And here is my Copic decorated wrapping paper and ribbon, cute, customised and quick!
Things to note:
- When using small stencils like this one there will be some overspray (where the Copic ink sprays over the edge of the stencil onto your project), if you really don't want this, protect your project with scrap paper as you spray. I didn't as I like the extra patterns it adds to the final piece.
For my second project I'm creating something slightly fancier - a stunning custom Christmas bauble. This really isn't as difficult as you may think - just don't drop it!
- Copic Sketch Markers in coordinating colours (I used: B79, RV66 & BG57)
- Copic Air Brush System
- Snowflake Die
- Mask It - masking film
- Clear glass or plastic bauble
- X-Press It Clear Gel Glue
- Silver Glitter
- Sticky tape and tissues
Begin by using your favourite die cutting system to cut some snowflakes from a sheet of Mask It film - this film has a sticky layer on one side making it a removable adhesive. Today we won't be using the die cut shape, but rather the surrounds! I cut 3 negative shapes to use - you may like to use more.
Remove the backing layer from the Mask it shapes and adhere the sticky negative shapes onto the bauble, you may need to cut them in 2 to fit onto the rounded surface - I also overlapped the pieces a little. I then used sticky tape to attach some tissues to protect the rest of the bauble and keep it from being coloured. Using my airbrush I have added a layer of BG57 as a base colour.
With the mask still in place add some of the RV66 - don't colour the whole thing, just add this to a few edges and maybe a little in the centre - remembering to leave space to add the 3rd and final colour.
Go ahead and add the last colour, I'm using a particularly dark colour B79 so am adding only a little!
Remove the tissue and repeat this whole colouring process, around the bauble until all of your die cut shapes have been coloured.
Remove the tissue and the Mask It and your project now looks something like this. You might choose to leave it like this is you don't like glitter.
For my final step I have dribbled X-Press It Clear Gel Glue around the top of the bauble and let it drip down the sides a little - now this is very thick and needs some encouragement to drip.
While glue is still wet shake your favourite colour of glitter over the top and then hang somewhere safe and leave overnight to dry. Once dry brush off any excess glitter and it's ready to use.
Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas (just a little early) and a wonderful new year...
Kate

Creating your own Stencils and Masks, using Acetate, Lace and Mask It
We are going to have a play - no stress and practically no experience required to be able to create along with today's post. Today I will be showing you how to use masks and stencils with your Copic Markers and Copic Airbrush to create stunning backgrounds for cards or pages. Once again I will be creating in my gorgeous X-Press It Blending Journal - but you can also use X-Press It Blending Card.
To play along you will need:
To play along you will need:
- Clear Acetate sheets
- X-Press It Blending Journal or X-Press It Blending Card
- Copic Sketch markers
- Copic Colourless Blender n in a small misting bottle
- X-Press It Mask It
- Copic Airbrush System (either travel or compressor unit)
- lace or doilies
Before I go on - let me clear up something that is often a bit confusing - what's the difference between a Mask and a Stencil?
Wikipedia defines a Stencil as 'a thin sheet of material, such as paper, plastic, or metal, with letters or a design cut from it, used to produce the letters or design on an underlying surface by applying pigment through the cut-out holes in the material. The key advantage of a stencil is that it can be reused to repeatedly and rapidly produce the same letters or design.'
EG: using a 'hello' stencil would result in colouring the word 'hello' onto your project as shown below
A Mask is the reverse of a stencil and is defined as 'a covering to hide or guard .'
EG: using a 'hello' mask would result in colouring the SPACE around the word 'hello' on your project, you would get a white hello as shown below.
Using Acetate and X-Press It Mask It I have used metal scrapbooking dies and a die cutting machine to cut some images and shapes to create masks and stencils to use with my Copic Markers and Copic Airbrush.
I have started by air brushing a few co-ordinating colours onto a page in my X-Press It Blending journal, I like to start with some colour on the page so that the images are not too stark.
E15, BG15 & V15 |
Lay Mask It mask over background (sticky side towards paper) and press down to ensure good contact with the card. Using the Copic Airbrush System, spray with V15. When you remove the mask you will notice that the edges are clean and crisp - a hard edge.
Depending on the effect you are after you may find one of these products more suitable than the other when airbrushing with your Copics. Mask It = crisp image, Acetate = soft edge to image
Things to note:
Acetate is reusable and when used exclusively with Copic inks should last quite a while,
Mask It is more fragile and may only last for a few images before it tears.
Mask It is more fragile and may only last for a few images before it tears.
Of course you can use both of these products together on your Copic projects combining the soft and hard edges and overlaying and overlapping stencils and masks for wonderful effects like this.
Now masks and stencils are not only die cuts made from Acetate, plastic or Mask It, you can also use household objects or even fabrics! You can get stunning effects by using lace - even nanna's old doilies hiding in the cupboard, can get a second lease on life with this technique!
On this page I have begun by laying down a single colour over the background.
Background of BG15 |
Lay lace over coloured page and using sticky tape secure in place (this will result in a crisper image). Using Copic Airbrush spray BG49 through the lace onto your page.
Add BG49 |
Leave lace in place and spray N7 over the edges of the page through the lace - this will add a darker border.
Remove the lace and your background will look like this.
As an added bonus you now have this stunning piece of coloured lace you can use on other projects.
For something different add a brown into the mix to contrast with the pastel colours.
The N7 is on the top and the E15 is on the bottom to show you the difference between adding in a grey and adding in a brown - I think both look gorgeous.
Don't forget you can use the Copic Colourless Blender to add interest by laying a piece of lace over the background and spritzing the Colorless Blender over the top - this will result in an interesting effect essentially creating a bleached halo around the lace.
I've gone and added a little lace work to my masked page and a few masks and stencils to my lace page - to create a seamless 2 page spread in my Blending Journal. When combining both ideas (masks, stencils from acetate and Mask It & using Lace) you can create stunning backgrounds like this - imagine this as the background for your card, scrapbook layout or journal page!
And surprisingly using the airbrush uses significantly less ink than colouring the same area with your actual markers.
You can see all of the individual elements combine to create gorgeous, yet distinct coordinating pages.
Both pages use the following Copic colours.
Colorless Blender, V15, BG15, E15, BG49 & N7 |
I hope that this has given you a few ideas about how to use Acetate, Mask It and even lace to create stunning backgrounds using your Copic Markers.
